What about vacations? Will your dog go with you or stay home?
Both choices have their own set of complications. Taking a dog with you on vacation means making sure it is welcome everywhere you go and could certainly curtail your activities. But more about that in a future post. Today we’ll talk about leaving your pet at home.
Find someone reliable to care for your dog. Make a list of your expectations: can the caregiver be gone during the day, does the dog need medications or a special diet, do you expect the caregiver to take the dog for a walk every day? Ask your dog-owning friends who they recommend. Then talk to in-home pet sitters, boarding facilities and your veterinarian. DO NOT RELY ON YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS! If you work out an arrangement with a friend or neighbor, be prepared to pay or trade and be sure to call during your vacation to verify that all is going well. Please do NOT EVER leave your dog home alone. Automatic feeders and waterers can malfunction or run out and your dog won’t have anyone to help if he gets into trouble.
Tomorrow’s question: What if your dog gets sick?
